Phase-Change Phenomena

Introduction

  • Many engineering applications involve solid-liquid and liquid-gas phase-change:

    • Thermal energy storage and management

    • Liquid and solid fuel combustion

  • Complex physical processes that require special numerical methods

Research Details

  • Melting of a heavy hydrocarbon (eicosane)

  • 2-D incompressible laminar flow

  • Complex physics:

    • Moving boundary problem

    • Natural convection in the melt

    • Heat transfer through a thin molten layer

    • Solid movement and interaction with the melt

  • Innovative coupling between the immersed boundary and enthalpy methods

  • Fully resolved simulation
